Susana L\u00f3pez returns to Elevator Bath with the follow-up to her critically acclaimed album, “Cr\u00f3nica de un secuestro” (2020). That release showcased L\u00f3pez’s refined approach to audio exploration, which predominantly utilizes field recordings, electronically generated sounds, and layers of vocal harmonics. With “The Edge of the Circle,” similar techniques have been employed, but the final product is an altogether more ominous affair, relying heavily on atmosphere in the creation of dense clouds of hypnotic, foreboding sound. 

“The Edge of the Circle” portrays a kind of abstract narrative that comprises five concentric rings rather than chapters. The work suggests an initial departure along an open road; a tumultuous journey through an intense storm; a trek along a menacing footpath; a wilderness populated by wandering spirits; and finally, a majestic, enormous hall in which those spirits dwell. 

With this new work, Susana L\u00f3pez has created a vividly expressive sound cycle redolent of mythic archetypes and rich symbolism. Above all, however, “The Edge of the Circle” is a highly compelling piece of dark ambient artistry and a welcome return for a fascinating, singular composer in peak form. 

1. Luz Negra. Pieza inspirada por la obra de artistas como Kenneth Anger, Derek Jarman o Cameron,\nque se interesaron por las tradiciones secretas en el arte, como la magia, las sociedades secretas, la antroposof\u00eda, las corrientes esot\u00e9ricas de las religiones o la psicodelia.\n\n2. Inspirada por la magia de los paisajes n\u00f3rdicos y creada a partir de grabaciones de campo\nque realic\u00e9 en el sur del pa\u00eds durante una residencia en Green Light District. Huldra es una seductora criatura, habitante de los bosques y de las leyendas del folklore Noruego.\n\n4. Ibn Arabi. Resultado de mis a\u00f1os de lecturas del maestro Ibn Arab\u00ed. M\u00edstico suf\u00ed, pensador y poeta,\nIbn al-Arabi es uno de los mayores pensadores de la historia. Naci\u00f3 en Murcia, al-Andalus, en el a\u00f1o 1165 d. C.\n\n5. Thousand Drones to Nubla. Fue creada en memoria de V\u00edctor Nubla qui\u00e9n falleci\u00f3 durante el confinamiento. Un buen amigo, gran m\u00fasico, escritor, dinamizador cultural y pionero de la m\u00fasica experimental en Espa\u00f1a.\n\n6. The Last Wave. Un derviche sonoro, una forma de viaje a nuestro interior a trav\u00e9s de c\u00edrculos\nsonoros conc\u00e9ntricos, mediante la combinaci\u00f3n de paisajes sonoros ambientales y electr\u00f3nica experimental.\n\nTodas las composiciones han sido creadas a partir de grabaciones de campo transformadas, sintetizadores humanizados, cajas de ritmos deconstruidas y voces sintetizadas.\nPiezas todas acompa\u00f1adas de mi \u201ctri\u00e1ngulo s\u00f3nico\u201d, un instrumento realizado con objetos encontrados, como muelles y madera, y amplificado con micros de contacto. 

“The Edge of the Circle” is released digitally and as a compact disc in an edition of 200 copies. Susana L\u00f3pez’s intricate and evocative artwork (inspired by a cosmological diagram of Ibn Arabi (1165-1240): Murcian philosopher, poet, traveller, and wise man) graces the six-panel digipak, inside and out.  <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n
